Installation of the camera system: Meteor research connecting Central Europe and the southern sky in Chile

A four-member team set off for distant Chile: Libor Lenža, director of the Valašské Meziříčí Observatory; Jakub Koukal, designer of the observing system and a specialist at the observatory; Jan Zítka, the observatory's electrical technician; and Jiří Srba, an external collaborator from the Astronomical Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences. They left on 29 May 2025 at 6 a.m. for Prague airport, flew to Paris, then to Santiago de Chile and on to La Serena.

Expanding the camera network: Meteor research connecting Central Europe and the southern sky in Chile

From a Czech observatory to the Chilean sky: we are expanding the CEMeNt camera and spectroscopic network with two stations in the Andes to link Central Europe with the 'South.' More clear nights and high altitude in Chile will significantly increase the number and quality of meteor and spectrum records. The goal is to globally map the composition of meteoroids and uncover traces of planet formation. The first results already confirm a major breakthrough.
