Sh2-86
HII Region in Vulpecula

About
A large emission nebula in Vulpecula, about 6,000 light-years away, that surrounds the young open cluster NGC 6823. Sources give its width as about 40′. Light from the cluster's stars is pushing the gas outward into pillar-like columns.
Imaging tips
- At 810–1350 mm on APS-C (1240–2060 mm full frame) the nebula spans a large part of the frame, and NGC 6823 sits only 4.3′ away at its heart.
- Sources give about 40′ across, so a wide field is needed; M27 sits about 3° away, east of it, if you plan a wider mosaic.
- One imager built a luminance layer from 140 minutes of Hα (7 × 20 minutes) and added 30 minutes each of red, green and blue.
- Sources differ on the name NGC 6820: Wikipedia applies it to the whole nebula, while two imagers' pages use it for a small flaring patch near the cluster.
- Best in July; it peaks near 63° altitude from 50°N.
