Sh2-82 — Little Trifid
HII Region in Sagitta

About
A small star-forming cloud in Sagitta, about 3,500 light-years away, that combines a red glowing region, a blue reflection nebula and a dark dust cloud. The mix of the three is what earned it the names Little Trifid and Little Cocoon.
Imaging tips
- At 3030–5050 mm on APS-C the nebula fills roughly a third to half of the frame; it is about 8′ across, so it needs a long focal length.
- Because it has emission, reflection and dark-dust parts, broadband colour records the blue halo that narrowband alone would miss.
- One imager collected 7 hours 16 minutes of LRGB in 90-second subs and still called it a faint target that needed more integration.
- Best around June and July; it peaks near 58° altitude from 50°N.
