Sh2-71
Planetary Nebula in Aquila

About
A planetary nebula in Aquila with a lopsided ring and two lobes, about 3,300 light-years away. Minkowski found it in 1946, and which star created it is still argued: the bright variable one at the centre is too cool to ionize it alone.
Imaging tips
- Only about 2.5′ by 1.3′, so it needs a long focal length and a fine pixel scale.
- A planetary nebula is an emission object, so Hα and OIII suit it.
- Best in June and July; it reaches about 42° altitude from 50°N.
