Sh2-249
HII Region in Gemini

About
A faint cloud of glowing hydrogen in Gemini, about 5,200 light-years away. It is a separate emission nebula from IC 443, the Jellyfish Nebula, a supernova remnant about 5,000 light-years away that shares the same patch of sky.
Imaging tips
- At 300–500 mm on APS-C (460–770 mm full frame) the nebula, about 80′ across, takes up much of the frame.
- It is an emission nebula, so Hα or other narrowband data suits it better than plain RGB.
- Cr89 lies about 74′ away, nearby rather than in the same field.
- Best in December and January; it peaks near 63° altitude from 50°N.
