Sh2-205
HII Region in Camelopardalis

About
A large, dim hydrogen cloud on the Perseus and Camelopardalis border, about 3,000 light-years away; one imager describes its bright part as peanut-shaped. In wide fields it sits beside NGC 1491 (Sh2-206), at a similar distance, while the colourful cluster King 7 lies about 8,500 light-years away, behind both.
Imaging tips
- At 300–500 mm on APS-C (460–770 mm full frame) it can be framed with space to spare, and a wide field also catches NGC 1491.
- Very dim and difficult, one imager says, and few images exist; his 12 hours were 11 of Hα plus 1 of OIII, through a 200 mm lens.
- Another imager combined 62 ten-minute Hα frames with RGB for about 19.5 hours, taking the Hα under moonlight and the colour data without it.
- NGC 1444 lies about 52′ away, nearby in a wider field.
- Best in November and December; it peaks near 87° altitude from 50°N.
