H-NGC5907 — Splinter Galaxy
Galaxy in Draco

About
A thin edge-on spiral in Draco, about 46.5 million light-years away and roughly 173,000 light-years long. Deep surveys trace one curved stellar stream around it, about 220 kpc (some 717,000 light-years) long; an earlier study had reported a double loop. It is on the Herschel 400 list.
Imaging tips
- About 12×1′, so it spans a third to half of the frame at 2020–3370 mm on APS-C.
- One 29.5-hour image combined 14 h 40 m of luminance with 14 h 50 m of colour, all in 5-minute subs, and showed a bright core and dark dust lanes.
- A galaxy, so broadband filters suit it.
- Best around April and May; it peaks near 84° altitude from 50°N.
