H-NGC584
Galaxy in Cetus

About
An E4 elliptical galaxy in Cetus, around 60 million light-years away, in the NGC 584 group. William Herschel found it in 1785. The group also holds NGC 596, 600, 615 and 636. It is in the Herschel 400.
Imaging tips
- Too small to frame at 4×2′: use a long focal length and a fine pixel scale.
- NGC 596 is about 25′ away (approximate, from coordinates), so it is nearby rather than inside a tight frame; one imager caught both at 1600 mm.
- That imager took seven 6-minute subs at ISO 3200 through a Moon & Skyglow filter (about 42 minutes); an older film shot used 48 minutes.
- Surface brightness is 21.4 mag/arcsec², and an elliptical needs broadband data.
- Best in September and October, but it stays below 34° altitude from 50°N.
