H-NGC5322
Galaxy in Ursa Major

About
An elliptical galaxy in Ursa Major, about 79 million light-years away and some 140,000 light-years across. It leads its own small group, has a boxy outline with a stellar disc buried in its core, and two radio jets emerge from a LINER nucleus. William Herschel found it in 1790. It is in the Herschel 400.
Imaging tips
- Only about 6′ × 4′, so it is too small to frame: use a long focal length and a fine pixel scale.
- Faint for its size at 22.2 mag/arcsec², and an elliptical needs broadband data, so plan many hours of luminance and colour.
- Best around April and May; it peaks near 80° from 50°N.
