H-NGC5033
Galaxy in Canes Venatici

About
A spiral galaxy in Canes Venatici with a Seyfert nucleus, roughly 40 to 54 million light-years away depending on the method. Its glare comes from the nucleus; the surrounding disk is dim and bends out of plane toward the south. It forms a pair with the spiral NGC 5005. It is in the Herschel 400.
Imaging tips
- At 2200–3670 mm on APS-C (3380–5630 mm on full frame) the 11′ × 5′ disk fits the frame with room around it.
- Faint at 23.2 mag/arcsec², with a bright core against a dim disk. One imager gathered 7 h 37 min of red, green, blue and Hα; another about 7 hours of luminance plus RGB.
- One wider frame put NGC 5005 in its upper right, with the small galaxies UGC 8303 and UGC 8314 below NGC 5033.
- Best around March and April; it peaks near 77° from 50°N.
