H-NGC4526
Galaxy in Virgo

About
A lenticular galaxy in Virgo, about 52–55 million light-years away, seen nearly edge-on with a dusty disc embedded in it. It hosts a black hole of about 450 million solar masses, and the Type Ia supernova SN 1994D appeared in it. It is in the Herschel 400.
Imaging tips
- At 3460–5770 mm on APS-C it fills a third to half of the frame, so plan for a long focal length.
- One imager framed it with NGC 4535: 10.7 hours with a 152 mm refractor, 23 × 900 s luminance and 10 × 600 s per colour filter, over three weeks.
- Best around March and April; it stays below 48° altitude from 50°N, so transit is low.
