H-NGC3877
Galaxy in Ursa Major

About
A type Sc spiral set in Ursa Major, long and narrow at 5.3′ × 1.2′, with distance estimates from about 38 to 50 million light-years. It belongs to the M109 Group and hosted the Type IIn supernova SN 1998S in 1998. It is in the Herschel 400.
Imaging tips
- Only 5′ × 1′, so it is too small to frame: use a long focal length and a fine pixel scale.
- Faint at 22.2 mag/arcsec². One imager shot luminance only, 21 subs of 5 minutes (1.75 hours) at 1085 mm from a Bortle 9 city site.
- The 3.7-magnitude star Chi Ursae Majoris lies just north of it in the sky.
- Best from February to April; it peaks near 87° from 50°N.
