H-NGC3227
Galaxy in Leo

About
A spiral galaxy in Leo about 77 million light-years away, with an active Seyfert nucleus. It interacts with the dwarf elliptical NGC 3226, and the pair is Arp 94. It appears in the Herschel 400 list.
Imaging tips
- Small and faint at 23.6 mag/arcsec², so a long focal length and many hours of broadband data are needed.
- NGC 3226 (Arp 94) lies about 2.2′ away, in the same field as the main galaxy.
- One imager used 8 h 5 min of LRGB on a 12 inch f/3.6 astrograph with a 1.17° field; NGC 3227, NGC 3226 and NGC 3222 all fitted.
- Another imager gathered 8 h 50 min through a 152 mm refractor over several nights in June.
- Best around February and March; it peaks near 60° altitude from 50°N.
