H-NGC2482
Open Cluster in Puppis

About
Puppis is home to NGC 2482, an open cluster about 4,380 light-years away by one source, and roughly 400 million years old. William Herschel recorded it in 1784. About 37′ to its north lies Minkowski 3-4, a small planetary nebula.
Imaging tips
- Sources give about 10′ across; 2020–3370 mm on APS-C frames it with room around it.
- Minkowski 3-4 is 37′ away, beyond a frame of this size, so include it only with a wider field.
- One imager used a 6-inch f/4.5 scope and a mono camera with 45 frames each of L, R, G and B from a Bortle 9 backyard.
- Brightness is 21.3 mag/arcsec². Best in January and February, but it peaks near 16° from 50°N.
