B35
Dark Nebula in Orion

About
A dark nebula in Orion, seen against the glowing gas of the Lambda Orionis Ring, about 1,500 light-years away. Infrared images show it hides young stars and an Herbig-Haro object, HH 175.
Imaging tips
- At 3030–5050 mm on APS-C the 8×5′ cloud takes a third to half of the frame; on full frame it needs longer still, so plan a fine pixel scale.
- One imager gathered 43 h 20 min in total: L, R, G and B plus 17 h 40 min of Hα (53 × 1200 s), though a dark nebula itself calls for broadband.
- B30 lies in the same ring, but a very wide field would be needed to show both.
- Best in December; it peaks near 49° altitude from 50°N.
- That same imager framed a field about 3° across, a wide view that takes in the surrounding Lambda Orionis Ring rather than only the 8×5′ cloud.
