Dark Nebula in Aquila

About
An elongated dark nebula in southern Aquila near the Scutum border, about 10′ by 3′ in sources, running northeast to southwest. Lynds numbered it LDN 531 and gave it the top opacity class, 6. Its southern half is the denser part.
Imaging tips
- Dark nebulae call for broadband imaging; here the cloud is set against the rich Scutum Star Cloud.
- One imager recorded 42 min of luminance as 14 × 3 min and 30 min per colour channel as 5 × 6 min; another used 4 × 10 min luminance and 2 × 10 min per channel.
- One imager noted that north of the frame the Scutum Star Cloud thins into reddened, dimmed stars, so a wider field may show more context.
- Barnard described a comet-like shape with a convex western side.
- Best around June and July; it peaks near 33° altitude from 50°N.
