Arp82
Galaxy in Cancer

About
NGC 2535 and its neighbour NGC 2536 in Cancer, listed by Arp among spirals with a bright companion. The encounter distorted the disk and arms of NGC 2535, and ultraviolet images show blue star clusters along it. Redshift gives about 207 million light-years; direct measurements average nearer 88 million.
Imaging tips
- NGC 2535 spans about 2.5′ × 1.2′, so the pair is too small to frame: use a long focal length and a fine pixel scale.
- Surface brightness is 23.1 mag/arcsec², so plan many hours of broadband data; narrowband filters do not suit galaxies.
- One imager used a 14-inch LX200R at f/10 with an STL-11000XM camera, taking eight 10-minute luminance frames and two 10-minute frames per colour.
- One imager notes that in both galaxies the arms leave a ring rather than the core.
- Best around January and February, peaking near 65° altitude from 50°N.
