Arp316 — Hickson 44
Galaxy in Leo

About
Hickson 44, a compact group of four galaxies in Leo about 80 million light-years away: NGC 3185, NGC 3187, NGC 3190 and NGC 3193. Arp listed part of it as Arp 316, under "Groups of galaxies". The lenticular NGC 3190 is the member singled out as notable.
Imaging tips
- The brightest members cover only about 5′ × 3′, so a long focal length is needed to fill the frame with them.
- The four members are spread wider than that: one imager's 1.56° field centred on NGC 3190 also held NGC 3185, NGC 3187, NGC 3189 and NGC 3193.
- Faint at 23.4 mag/arcsec², so broadband data over many hours; that imager used 21 luminance subs of 12 minutes plus about 168 minutes of colour, roughly 7 hours.
- Best around February and March; it peaks near 62° altitude from 50°N.
