Arp272
Galaxy in Hercules

About
NGC 6050 and IC 1179, two spirals in Hercules that touch through their arms, with a third galaxy also interacting nearby. They lie in the Hercules Cluster, around 450 million light-years away. Arp listed the pair among galaxies with connected arms.
Imaging tips
- NGC 6050 measures about 0.9′ × 0.7′ and IC 1179 about 0.6′ × 0.4′, so the pair is too small to frame: use a long focal length and a fine pixel scale.
- Faint at 23.1 mag/arcsec², and galaxies need broadband, so plan many hours of data.
- IC 1179 hosted the Type II-P supernova SN 2006cd, found on 8 May 2006.
- Best around May and June; it peaks near 58° altitude from 50°N.
