Arp194
Galaxy in Ursa Major

About
UGC 6945, three interacting galaxies in Ursa Major, about 570 million light-years away. Arp listed it among galaxies with material ejected from nuclei. The northwest object is itself a merger of two galaxies, and a stream of stripped material appears to link it to a third galaxy roughly 40″ south-east, though Hubble images show the stream only lies in front of that galaxy.
Imaging tips
- Only about 3′ × 2′, so it is too small to frame: use a long focal length and a fine pixel scale.
- Faint at 23.6 mag/arcsec², so plan many hours of broadband data.
- The southeast galaxy sits only about 40″ from the merging pair, so fine sampling helps keep the components apart.
- Best around March and April; it climbs to about 76° from 50°N.
