Arp143
Galaxy in Lynx

About
A close pair of interacting galaxies in Lynx, NGC 2444 and NGC 2445, roughly 180 to 190 million light-years away. Arp listed it among galaxies with material emanating from elliptical galaxies. NGC 2445 is a distorted ring, thought to result from the two passing through each other.
Imaging tips
- Each galaxy is only about 2′ across, so the pair is too small to frame by focal length alone: use a long focal length and a fine pixel scale.
- Faint for its size at 23.6 mag/arcsec², and a galaxy pair, so broadband filters and a long total integration suit it.
- One imager shot 8 frames of 8 minutes with a 10-inch Schmidt-Cassegrain at 1600 mm and a light-pollution filter.
- Best around January; it climbs to about 79° altitude from 50°N.
